January 2, 2006 Ugly Club takes on the beautiful people by Gulliver
A club for ugly people has been launched by an advertising
executive with a big nose and jowly face.
The Hamburg Ugly Club is Harald Gasper's backlash against
the beautiful people.
The 41-year-old German founded the club with the help of his
lanky, big-footed wife.
Gasper says the ugly are tired of the idea that you have to
be beautiful to get on in life, that beauty equals social
power, and beautiful people earn more and get promoted quicker.
By coming together, they hope to show that they too have something
to offer and that the world doesn't just belong to beautiful
people.
"Ugly People of the World Unite" is the unofficial
motto of the club, which attracted 270 members immediately
after its launch in December 2005.
The club requires of its members that they identify one feature
about themselves they are most unhappy about. Stomachs top
the list, followed by noses and hips.
The club's role models include the new German chancellor Angela
Merkel, the Duchess of Cornwall and the singer, Janis Joplin.
They are all proof you don't have to be beautiful to succeed,
says Gasper .
