Be afraid, be very afraid. Some rollercoaster rides
can scare the bejeesus out of you. They are not for
the faint-hearted.
Here are some of the world's greatest - and scariest
- rollercoasters:
Kingda Ka
Six Flags Great Adventure
Jackson, N.J.
Open: April to October
The fastest roller coaster in the world goes from
0 to 128 miles an hour, straight up, like a rocket,
then down 41 stories, twisting in a 270-degree spiral.
Total time: 28 seconds. Are you scared yet?
Top Thrill Dragster
Cedar Point
Sandusky, Ohio
Open: May to October
The scariest of Cedar Point's many coasters, the Top
Thrill Dragster boasts a drop of 400 feet, speeds
up to 120 mph and has a $25 million price tag. Like
Kingda Ka, it too lasts about half a minute.
Superman: The Escape
Six Flags Magic Mountain
Valencia, California
Open: all year; weekends in the winter months
On this $20 million monster, riders shoot up 415 feet
on two parallel tracks at a maximum speed of 100 mph.
The way down is accompanied by 6.5 seconds of weightlessness--just
like flying with the Caped Crusader.
Millennium Force
Cedar Point
Sandusky, Ohio
Open: May to October
Another Cedar Point favorite, the Millennium Force
hits 93 mph and drops riders 300 feet. Better (or
worse) yet, the ride lasts for more than two minutes.
Price tag: about $25 million.
Goliath
Six Flags Magic Mountain
Valencia, California
Open: all year; weekends in the winter months
Opened in 2000, Goliath looks a lot like its Texas
brother Titan (including that scary tunnel). Alas,
Goliath is only 235 feet tall, 10 feet shorter than
Titan.
Xcelerator
Knott's Berry Farm
Buena Park, Calif.
Open: every day except Christmas
Built in 2002, this hydraulically launched coaster,
with 1957-Chevy-style cars, reaches 82 mph--in just
2.3 seconds--and stands 205 feet tall. It serves 1,330
passengers per hour.
Nitro
Six Flags Great Adventure
Jackson, N.J.
Open: April to October
Plummets 23 stories, reaches 80 mph and lasts for
more than two minutes. And if that's not enough to
scare you, the cars don't have sides.
Desperado
Buffalo Bill's Resort & Casino
Primm, Nevada
Open: all year; closed two days a week in the winter
months
Seventeen hundred riders per hour take in the desert
landscape on this 2:45 ride. They also plunge 225
feet at a frightful 55 degrees.
Steel Dragon 2000
With three gi-normous hills and two tunnels, the Steel
Dragon 2000 in Nagashima, Japan will eat you up and
spit you out. It's the world's longest rollercoaster
with 8100 feet (2500 meters) of track and speeds of
95 miles (153 km) per hour.
Tower of Terror
Bring along some toilet paper for this trip because
you could be having a nasty accident in your pants
after riding on Australia's most terrifying rollercoaster.
The Tower of Terror at Dreamworld in Coomera, Australia
drops you from 377 feet (115 meters) at more than
100 miles (160 km) per hour.
Colussus
Don't eat a big lunch before riding on this coaster
because chances are you'll be puking it up all over
the guy in the car ahead of you. The Colussus at Thorpe
Park in England sends riders upside down a record
ten times. The design includes a 90 foot loop and
back-to-back corkscrews.
Dodonpa
The Dodonpa roller coaster in Fujikyu Highland Park
in Japan is one of the world's fastest coaster thanks
to a specially designed air launch system which has
riders going from 0 to 107 miles(172 km) per hour
in less than 2 seconds! Riders are sent up a massive
hill and then whisked down at a 90 degree angle faster
than you can say, "I'm gonna be sick." |
